Digest bills itself as a magazine for eaters and thinkers, asking how food shapes the way we live. It's certainly not written for people of lukewarm spirit. New York is the center of its universe, but there is some good food elsewhere.
This issue, in fact, begins with a surprisingly poetic, dare we say seductive, ode to Nigella Lawson’s clementine cake and its companion, Maialino’s blood orange olive oil cake. But then it’s on to
- Eating pizza in cars
- Spaghetti in Tokyo
- A Queens restaurant reputedly owned by a member of the Genovese crime family recommended by a backhoe operator on Water Tunnel No. 3
- Another orange dessert courtesy of a Greek cook in Astoria, Queens
- Romeo and Juliet pie, which comes from Brazil, not Queens, and features guava and fresh cheese
No issue of Digest is quite like any other and that is most assuredly the point.
Paperback. Color photographs throughout.
